More Photos...Butterfly's Graduation!

After downloading the photos in the previous post, we started to sort through the photos Daddy took of Butterfly's graduation last week.  (This was the reason he was in the US for a week.)

They are both home now and we're enjoying the adrenaline of prepping for the Music Competition (read previous posts)...but here are a few shots of our oldest girl!  Wow!  She even astounded the family by singing the National Anthem at the beginning of commencement!

You will also see a shot of Daddy with his dear parents...I think one of the very best pictures I've ever seen of them...and our eldest son "The Rockstar" with his beautiful wife "The Princess" at graduation with Daddy and Butterfly.  Hope you can decipher all the photos...

Plus we've added, for you CSI fans...a few shots of the Health officials who boarded the plane when Daddy and Butterfly arrived in this country, to take everyone's temperatures...

And a few extra shots of the gang since Butterfly's arrival...

(One other note...for those of you who are trying to post comments to the Blog...I can see them...but I cannot publish them due to the blocking of the website...please keep the comments coming and I'll publish them as soon as I am able!)

Without further ado...Butterfly's big weekend, in pictures...

I don't know where my comments will post with all the pictures I'm attaching to this post...as I'm doing it through email and can't see the website...my apologies if the pictures are out of order or don't make sense...

At any rate, these shots are of our dress rehearsal and the day of the performance last Friday night.

I'll post more photos after the FINALS this Saturday night...

If you feel I've overloaded you with pictures, bear in mind that the grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts and uncles are eager for any and all photos!

Back to rehearsal!

Cowboys & Cowgirls...The Remix

What a week it's been...

As we slogged through a week of rehearsals and exhaustion while awaiting the dramatic return of Daddy and Butterfly, I kept telling myself...only until May 23rd!

The joy in my heart was immense as we cleared the hurdle of Friday night.  The hot lights of the stage had burned our eyes, the heavy stage make-up had clogged our pores...and we had danced our feet off...but it was over!

19 Cowboys and Cowgirls performed a Branson-styled stage show complete with dialogue in English (no one missed their line), cowboy hats and boots and several verses of "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain," "Ol' Susanna", "You are my Sunshine" all polished of with a Square Dance!

We basked in the afterglow of thrilled parents, many inquiries from the public about our little school and of course...our pride of having reached the summit of this mountain....

...but alas...it's not over...

NO...much to my amazement, yea, even my surprise...we've been petitioned to return...to perform a "Remix" of our Friday night show.

(Culture note:  Things "Here" take on epic proportions...The stage was massive, the stage lights brighter than the sun and we were performing at a Mall that claims to be "The Worlds LONGEST Walking Street."  What was pitched to me 3 months ago as a Spring Performance for the parents became an ENTRY into a Music Festival COMPETITION with maybe 2,000-3,000 in attendance.  Even on Friday night, I had no idea that we were being JUDGED for a competition!  I can't remember if I posted this thought last week or not...but I am declare...Ben Hur was a more diminutive production than ours!)

So this morning, as we returned to school with Daddy and Butterfly greeting our co-workers with smiles and hugs...they dropped the bomb on me...

"Teacher...our school's performance has been selected to go on to the FINALS in the Music Festival's Competition, THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!"

I think to myself..."You've got to be kidding me?!  This is supposed to be our 4 day weekend for Dragon Boat Festival!  We're supposed to hang out...chill out...play.  And, BTW, what competition?  I rehearsed kids for a public show as a part of a Music Exhibition...NOT a MUSIC COMPETITION!"

I had to remind myself that they're all watching the foreign teachers to see our response.  Will we be small, petty...will we fuss and moan...?  Daddy's eyes were wide with anticipation...his surprised look began to wear a bit like plastic the longer he waited for my response...

Then I remember an important concept from my favorite Book... that I should do all things as unto Him...

Once again I recall that I must remain calm and remember why I came...

...to serve...

...and at this moment...my service to this school is to help them put on another performance in front of yet another group of several thousand people...AND to be broadcast LIVE on local television!

What a surprise it is to come half way around the world...and to be used to do exactly what I used to do...theatre...

I heard just last week, too, that they want me to build a radio studio in the school to assist as a language learning tool...

Before I came here, I could not imagine WHY He was sending me Here...what could I possibly do?...

How fun it is to discover His plan.

Yee Haw!

A New Approach

Well...we'll see if this works...

Periodically the websites we visit are restricted Here...blocked.  For now, due to some sort of sensitivity, the direct access I've had to the blogsite is unreachable.

However, in theory, an alternative method that I am now employing is to work...but I will be unable to see anything "posted" until our return visit There...in just 4.5 weeks.

So for those of you There, who read this blog...could you send me an email...you can also post a comment as those come directly to our email before posting to let me know if this writing has reached the blogsite?

Daddy is set to return in 48 hours with our eldest girl, Butterfly. Our arms are so eager to hold them!  Please intercede for them for timely flights (they have one very tight connection) and NO FEVERS or illness on their plane.  If there is a fever, they, along with everyone else on the plane will be quarantined.

More updates coming...

graduaton festivities

Hello, from the dad of this H-bunch!

I'm reporting live from the high school graduation festivities of our oldest (and most highly decorated) H-daughter!

The secretary of family communications, aka the normal author of this blog, aka "Momma" asked me to post a note for her here. She said she'd tried to post but was unable to access the blogger account for the past day or two...some block or something...I probably wouldn't understand and certainly couldn't explain to you, the reader. My first instinct to repair a communication problem like this would be to check the tin can...if it's OK, the string is probably just not tight enough. Momma will get to the bottom of it and she'll be back to you here just as soon as she can.

So she and the youngsters are at work and school as usual. I on the other hand, am visiting my Mom and Dad, my oldest son and his wife, and my oldest daughter on this occasion of her graduation. Wow is it quiet at night here! So far no little kids have climbed into bed with me since I've been here...it's surreal. So often there are at least a couple of little ones that join us each night at some point. I'm usually the one that wakes first to deal with the drink of water, the bathroom visit, or the boogieman scare. I hope Momma is getting enough sleep this week!

Our graduate is a highly, highly decorated scholar, and an accomplished musician and vocalist as well. It has been so wonderful to see her blossoming in so many leadership roles...I feel a need to confess a great deal of pride right now--there, I'm over it--well, not really! She's awesome! Her grad ceremony is tonight, and in just a couple of days she will fly back with me to join the rest of her fan club (all of her younger sisters and brother). Good times!

It has been such a blessing to spend time with my oldest son and his wife, who are moving into their new home in less than a week. They are a wonderful pair. They just competed together in a multi-athalon this weekend. Nine and one half hours of off-road biking, cross- country running, and hacking through the woods with a map and compass. Oh, to be young again. They placed well, and best of all, they could walk the next day! Cool! I'm so thankful for the decisions they are making as a young couple. Again, I confess pride.

The time with my parents has been priceless. Dad was just released from the hospital three days ago, and he is still not feeling too well at all. But we have watched a few episodes of "the price is right," we've visited with the kids, and we've talked, unimpeded by tin cans or strings. Mom is great. I have enjoyed conversations with her, and I've enjoyed her cooking, too. She is walking great on the reconstructed feet. She is sharp, well organized, and busy. Mom is like the EverReady bunny! She helps dad with his meds. She cooks for his special diet. She keeps the house up and manages mountains of insurance/hospital/doctor bills, etc. I can't keep up with her. Sunday she told me that I drive like an old woman! Mind you, I was doing the speed limit at the time, and as she said it, an old woman blew past us at about mach 3! "That's the way we get around here," she said. Mom, you'd better slow down or I'll be forced to take your keys or put a governor on your mini-van!

Gotta go...graduation ceremonies soon...Momma will be bogging again soon...Dad out...

Let's all Panic...Shall we?

The past few days have been BUSY. So busy that we feel like we're on a roller coaster that goes too high, too fast and WE WANT OFF...but they won't stop it till the ride ends.

The best forecast for the end of this ride...May 23rd.

Tomorrow, or beloved Daddy boards a plane to travel some 20 hours to see our oldest girl, Butterfly, GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL! How could that be possible? She was just a little sprout who sang beautifully and smiled with a toothless grin! Now, she's passing through the first of many major milestones in her life...the rest of the H gang...remaining Here...will likely be in need of some emotional counseling as we are missing the big trip!

While our Daddy is away, we are all going to press on...trying to do school with our faculty reduced...and worse still...trying to shop and live with 5 kids and 1 parent...in 100 degree heat! If you're so inclined...PRAY FOR US!

Let's all panic...shall we?

To add to the fun, I've been working with the students of our school to prepare a musical/drama performance . The performance had been scheduled for June 6th...then on Monday...they CHANGED the dates...to MAY 22ND! TWO WEEKS SOONER!!!!!

Let's all panic...shall we?

Some of you saw our Christmas program posted on the blog from last term...well this term...we're going cowboy! In Music class I taught them how to sing "She'll be Coming Around The Mountain," "You are My Sunshine" and "Oh Susanna." They have all mastered the English in the music now and we're practicing daily to refine the choreography, lines and the wee square dance that is sandwiched within this western musical review...(they're dancing to Turkey in the Straw, while I "call" it)...Dad is certain if things fold up here that I've got a future callin' at the Square Dancin' club! I'm confident that we could land a gig for these kids in Branson!

The entire performance makes me chuckle to see all these darling Asian kids puttin' on their best twang and cowboy swagger!

This morning we were greeted with news from our employer that due to the Swine Flu (which is freak out alert Priority #1 Here)...that Daddy and Butterfly could be quarantined for 7 days, separated from the family until they're sure Swine Flu didn't come Here with them! The Safety officer here told me on the phone this morning that "we should pray that they don't close down the borders which would leave" Daddy There, instead of HERE!...

The frustration of Media-hyped health crisis!

Let's ALL panic...shall we?!!!!!

A rootin'-tootin' good day to all you cowpokes out there...

Renovation

We lived for 6 years in an old, old farmhouse that had been ill-fated to a life of half-hearted devotion on the part of it's owners. For all the years it stood before us and sadly including the years we inhabited it...it was never "finished." We joked that it was under constant renovation.

Living in a home under renovation, is not fun.

After 10 months of living abroad, I find that sometimes living within my mind that is forcibly under renovation is even less pleasant. Of course I knew that in coming here, that stretching our lives and experiences far outside what we'd known before would cause us to change our thinking. But it is now that I understand more definitively that how I lived "There," in truth utilized very little thinking.

There I moved within a atmosphere of opinion, idealism and information gluttony. Whether through listening to radio, oral communications at home and around town, picking up an occasional newspaper, an infrequent newscast or the magazine covers at the grocery-store check out...even WITHOUT a subscription to any cable television...my mind was engorged with Western-premised ideas.

Here, without command of the language, the attainable information has slowed to a trickle and after 10 months my synapses have slowly begun to fire with free thought. There is so little communication for me to absorb...that finally the stores in my mind have emptied out...and my mind has begun to consider the world around me, with curiosity.

It's hot here tonight. Someone remembered finally to turn on the heat lamp...Here, in our city called "The Furnace" of this nation... this night the children were restless asking for air conditioning...the evening cool is ever so tardy. So I sit up trying to be still, swatting at thirsty mosquitoes and it begins again...my mind begins to process what I've seen Here, what I "knew" There and I see that my foundation is being excavated.

I'm reading several books right now. One that is an extremely powerful wake-up call to the Brothers and Sisters in the West from a man who lived in the East and suffered enormous persecution. Another that was written some years ago by an intellectual from the East, giving his dissertation on the mindset of the East versus the West. The two books on some matters are diametrically opposed. Both leave this reader with the persistent awareness that my fuzzy, sugar-coated worldview requires demolition and a surer foundation laid.

Yet growing up There...even though I would have NEVER admitted it, and in fact cleverly prided myself on being temperate in my culturally-biased thinking...I was entrenched in my simplistic constructs of life, faith and mankind.

We are pressed in on all sides Here by humanity. Often I am so close to another human being on the bus riding to town that I feel I should confess something untoward to my husband upon my return! Constantly my mind is processing the masses that I see each day through the filter of my Western, middle-class background. Yet, the longer I live Here...the more aware I am of the limitations I've had on my thinking and how I believe He wants me to have a greater scope, more generous eyes...like His. (Please don't get me wrong, this renovation of my mind leaves me constantly aware that the little boxes I had things filed in previously, especially God, are utterly useless and inadequate...so when I say that my eyes might be like His...I mean that I might begin to experience a migration toward renewed sight...like His.)

Just this evening my eyes fell upon two farmers, in their manicured field, squatting down to diligently work their crops. They'd fashioned some sort of over sized parasol that jutted out of the ground to shield them from the merciless sun. Who are they? What is their story? Have they experienced love?

Then as we went down a city street a young man, his auto-repair shop a little stall in a row of similar businesses, sitting on his heels...filthy and literally covered in grease...working on an engine block out in the road. What does he dream about? What does he need? Has anyone taken the time to know him and share their heart with him?

We had a big discussion tonight with our dear, local friend who is growing and searching for more meaningful answers...we talked about Eastern mindset, the Western one and what his impressions were of the differences in our young nation's history and his country's ancient one...

We talked about the Family Here and the brothers and sisters There...he asked about the passion of those who follow in the West...is it as great as he imagines?

What could I answer?

When I answered that universal fire and passion were not necessarily the hallmarks I would think of...he said..."Ah, things that are easy to get, are easy to lose."

Perhaps that brings me back to the initial premise of this post...that every brick of "truth" that I hastily grabbed to form my early foundation is now being challenged and examined. If I say that love is in my foundation...then does that brick hold up under the pressure of the uncomfortable, culture-stress of my day to day existence? If not, I must renovate! I must replace that easily acquired brick with one that is divinely constructed to withstand any shaking that life in a new culture brings with it.

Every brick that I prided myself upon in my sure foundation must be inspected...lest my mindset and work on this Earth be built upon human conventions and reasoning.

Only then can I hope to have generous eyes that see those I pass by tomorrow in the Light of His love...not the vain curiosity of a common observer.

The cool has arrived...my pillow is calling...sorry for my long-winded post...

Frogs

The hot season is bearing down upon us...

...the frogs are singing every night now...their tune a mesmerizing, undulating tide that expands to inhabit the night air.

At night, with our windows now compulsorily open due to the warming trend, I swear sometimes I think I'll go deaf in the pitch range of those devoted minstrels...deaf or crazy.

I was a bit philosophical in the middle of the night...listening to the frogs. Their chorus so dense. It seemed perfectly uniform after listening for a great deal of time.

But occasionally there are a few who break with the masses and form their own ensemble...their tune sounding random at first but strikingly different, commanding my attention.

The din rises and falls as the frogs inhale and exhale .

The ensemble of the few catches my imagination and I wonder if my voice, within the wall of sound in which we live...if my voice is distinguishable from the noise...is the message I herald discernibly different and attention-grabbing like the ensemble of the few frogs?

O that it would be...

Reinforcements

Last month, as we approached our 9 month anniversary living Here...we had a welcome group of travelers join us. These dear ones have been our friends for over 10 years and many, many times He has intermingled our paths. This visit had been planned, even before we left There, but the purpose of the trip took on much more significance than was originally intended.

The photo above is of our first day back together. The shot is of Magpie, embraced by her dear friend and The Bug, with her dear friend...a ministry of mercy to our two who have missed friendship so badly during this first year Here.

We have been asking Him for the past year to raise up team members for us Here. Most cross-cultural families like ours are sent out with a Team, a group of like-minded souls who commit to working together toward common goals in the new culture. In our situation, we were initially sent out alone. At the school there are two other foreign teachers, both single...but as yet...no Team.

During our visit in Thailand over Spring Festival, we met with some friends who are connected to our home Meeting group back There. They have worked since 2000 outside of Bangkok. They went out as a group of 3 families. While visiting with them they impressed upon us again the need for Team Here. Before we left their company, it was a request we all lifted up together.

Very soon after our return from Thailand it seemed that supernatural pieces were beginning to "fall" into place. We knew of our good friend's long time heart for Here...and that they were open to going...if they received confirmation that this was His plan, not theirs. Our story of His leading to this place is a fantastic one...especially for those who believe that divine intervention is the thing of fairy tales...or that some impersonal deity exists but doesn't care about the details of our lives. Our experience profoundly refutes those ideologies.

At the end of February, we began to see the Master's design for our two families to work Here together. In a series of developments, seemingly unrelated, the door opened to TWO tailor-made opportunities for this family to come Here and to work alongside us. He, the husband of the family, having had 22 years of facilities management...will be managing facilities for the corporation that funds the school. She, the wife, having owned a commercial bakery for 18 years, will be fulfilling a request to open a bakery and coffeehouse here on the grounds of our Living Quarters. Two of their daughters, who will accompany them, will be enrolled in our school. Their presence, for Magpie and The Bug, a clear answer to our requests.

Above: Two of our chosen children, back in the country of their birth, now with their families...

***For those reading who have never considered adoption...please, do not limit the blessing in your life by remaining closed to the idea...the significant growth we've experienced as we've come to understand that we are likewise adopted in the spiritual realm...beyond description!

Above: Check out these wild Tour Guides...they loved carrying the guide's flag all around Xian...and of course, posing for photos!

Above: A shot of part of our travel group to Xian...funny to note...you can't see the Terra Cotta Warriors behind us...funnier still...it appears that Daddy and I have received some illumination from Above!

Above: the first ice cream of the season...(and sunshine that made The Bug sneeze!)

Above: This is our entire travel group...we took a few teachers with us from our school...we had our Local Family along with us as well as some new friends touring from California...what a crazy crew!
Over and over again in this first year of living Here we've experienced His mercy...and His favor. The challenges are great at times...but His grace is greater! Our Father has given us more and more understanding that He is not one that simply "regards" us...but truly, He loves us. So we say with confidence:
"The Lord has done great things for us and we are FILLED with joy." Ps 126:3
